America’s Birthday

Our country, how it began and how we continue to thrive, fascinates me. Sometimes, I wonder just how we keep it together. We’re like no other civilization before us. We’re unique and many people and events make up our story. I believe General George Washington said it best, Perseverance and spirit have done wonders in all ages.

We can’t forget how we got here.

This week, we begin celebrating America’s 250th birthday. There will be many events, discussions, and debates. I’ll be reading new books about our birthday and rereading many old ones. Here are a few of the books I’ve already read about America’s founding.

  • Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation by Joseph J. Ellis
  • Revolutionary Summer: The Birth Of American Independence by Joseph J. Ellis
  • The Cause: The American Revolution And Its Discontents by Joseph J. Ellis
  • 1776 by David McCullough
  • John Adams by David McCullough
  • The Constitutional Convention: A Narrative History from the Notes of James Madison by Edward J. Larson and Michael P. Winship
  • The Federalist by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay
  • Benjamin Franklin by Walter Isaacson
